TRENDS IN TOURISM DEVELOPMENT IN REGIONS HOSTING THE 2018 FIFA WORLD CUP

Abstract
The purpose of the article is to assess the impact on the regional economics of major sports events such as the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The relevance of the work is due to the need for the development of domestic tourism in Russia to diversify the structure of the economy and the analysis of the impact of major sports events on regional economics and on changes in tourist flows in the regions. The work focuses on the analysis of quantitative indicators, such as gross regional product, investments in fixed assets, tourist flows, financial indicators of service facilities (restaurants, hotels). The data from open statistical sources and methods of statistical analysis are used in the research. As a result, the authors found that the impact of the major sports events on regional economics is limited and in the short term does not lead to a steady increase in the
studied indicators. The differences in the dynamics of regional indicators of the capital and provincial regions are revealed. The provincial regions demonstrate the trend towards faster growth of tourist flows, despite lower investments in tourist infrastructure. It is also established that the regions did not use the FIFA World Cup host status to attract additional sources of investment.
